Description

MANY of their preconceptions would soon be shattered (as mine were). My own experience, however, pales beside the raw, physical discomfort that must have been felt by the early immigrants to the western provinces. I look back at them with awe, admiring their sheer tenacity and devotion to survival. And the immigration experience itself becomes, of necessity, one of survival: the personal survival of each and every immigrant who faces the daily reality of a totally different way of life. (1) Three million people from all the countries of Europe entered Canada during the period of the Great Migrations of 1896-1914. The Darwinian premise of the "survival of the fittest" was nowhere more evident than in these vast migrations of people from the ancient lands of Europe to the "new" lands of the Canadian West. Every individual man and woman among them would face his or her own personal adjustment experience in order to survive. They were in essence uprooted from all that was familiar to them, then transplanted to an alien land. Many had already survived a great deal to actually get to their new country, facing the prospect of starting anew with, in many cases, little or nothing in the way of belongings.
